Why are people so quick to dismiss?

I recently read an article about a pack of coyotes that are actually living in the back of our neighborhood. I had NO idea! People are generally worried about their outdoor cats, worried when they leave their small dog out in the back yard, normal things like that. Several people have tried to find a way to have them removed, relocated for safety reasons. The property they are currently calling home, is in the middle of 2 neighborhoods and a main highway. So many safety concerns! I personally would hate to see a pack wiped out because it was trying to cross a busy dangerous highway. Then you have people of the other side of the fence, that see the coyotes as a source of population control, and think that people who let their cats out deserve to have their cats eaten, because after all cat kill birds and are generally an annoyance. And that if people really loved their cats, they would keep them indoors.
What makes any one life more important then another? Have you ever tried to keep a cat in that didn't want to be there? I had indoor cats my whole life, when I was 17 I got a kitten, she had been born to an outdoor cat. I kept her indoors, fighting to get the door shut quick enough before she would try to dart outside. When I got married and we moved into our new home, she was about 4 years old, the door got left open and she was out. She came back every night, but she was a much happier cat being able to roam and be free. I feel like maybe she saw being indoors as a prison. We often forget that WE chose to domesticate cats and dogs, we forget that they were once free to roam and hunt. We are so self righteous as humans to think we know what's best for everything.  I don't want to see any animal hurt or killed, but at what point have we decided that we know better than the laws of nature?
