What is wrong with some people?!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/12/bob-accorti-shoots-five-_n_3430593.html

I read this article the other day about an officer who shot 5 kittens in the back yard of a woman that called for guidance on what to do about the kittens. After being told they would be euthanized do to what was said was an over crowding at the shelter, but she was unaware that they would be "euthanized" in her back yard. I use the word "euthanize" very lightly here, because I do not see that has euthanizing, I see that as an abuse of power and animal cruelty. Seriously, what kind of person can look at those defenseless creatures and open fire? It seems a bit ridiculous and TOTALLY unnecessary. And in front of children? How traumatizing that must have been for them. It seems more and more "police" get off on shooting animals and justifying it. The only crime those kittens committed, was being born. Yet we  have prisons full of murderers and rapists allowed to continue living, all because of their "human rights." "And the death penalty is "inhumane." When will people realize that animals have feeling too?! It kills me to hear about animals being shot by the people WE pay to protect us. I just don't get it. And I don't think I ever will, because some people are just too small minded to see that HUMANS domesticated animals and brought them into our homes, yet don't want to take responsibilty for them anymore. As I sit here typing this I have mulitple sleeping dogs currently in our house, I wouldn't part with any one of them for anything and would fight tooth and nail if someone tried to harm them. Wake up people, if you don't help them, who will? I say same on you Officer, for not showing even an ounce of compassion. The situation could have been handled so differently if you had thought with your "brain" instead of your "gun."

My dream...

My dream, as unrealistic as it may seem, is to help each and every animal have a loving home. It would be fabulous is this dream was attainable, but sadly it would mean that every single person would need to own several animals, and lets face it, that just won't happen. When people start their search for a pet, it usually starts with a fad, some Hollywood star carries around a chihuahua, suddenly everyone wants one, breeders go into overdrive and charge enormous amount of money, mean while a sad "mix" dog sits in a cold kennel scared and alone. Soon after a certain kind of dog is highlighted in a movie, and the process starts again. But now that people have moved on the chihuahua fad has ended and many of those are sent to shelters and often euthanized. It's a vicious cycle. One that will sadly probably never end.
Another problem is that once a dog has outlived its usefulness people tend to put it to the side. Many people surrender their elderly pets to make room for a new puppy or kitten. The old pet will most likely not be adopted and the be euthanized. They once were a beloved pet, now sitting on a cold slab, wondering what they had done wrong and why their family left them there to die. Part of my long range plan is to help as many elderly, tossed away pets as I can feel love in their final days. They deserve to know that someone loved them right to the very end. Even in shelters, puppies and kittens get picked first. One day...I will be able to do something, one day I will cater to elderly pets that have been tossed away.
My dog, Maya, was the very first dog that was mine, not a family dog, but mine. She was a sweet little chihuahua, that was so very smart. She would play dead if I said, "BANG!" She could dance, sit, high five and sing. She died last year at the age of 14. It was because of her, that I realized that so many older pets suffer a worse fate then the rest. She had lost her sight, most of her hearing and arthritis in her back, when she walked she would spin circles and sometimes bang into things. We loved her until her to her very last breath and love her still. When we made that awful trip to the vets office, she did something she hadn't done in quite a few months, she wagged her tail like crazy and howled and squealed, like she often did when she was excited. She was happy, she was happy that we had made the choice to end her suffering, even though we would miss her so. We knew we were doing the right thing. She's is why when we visit the local animal shelter that I look at the old dogs first.
So think about an elderly dog, even if it's for a short time, at least they will know love before they die.

Getting Started...

I have been trying so hard to find something to "blog" about. Something that hopefully will make a difference in some way. I LOVE animals, I love them more than most people. I said "most." They are innocent and loving, they become what WE create them to become. Just like pit bulls are NOT born vicious, they are taught to be that way, if they were born that way, there would be a huge number of pit bull puppy attacks, hm...haven't heard of one yet. We had a pit bull mix that died just a few months ago, she was 14 years old, we had, had her since she was 3 months old, we raised 3 children around her and never once did she snap or growl or show one ounce of aggression towards anyone.
My family has a houseful, it full of people and their pets. We have large, medium, small and extra small. They all coexist with each other and we haven't had one dog fight, NOT ONE! Our 2 lb chihuahua is more vicious that the 70 lb. boxer, he wouldn't hurt a fly...he might eat a couple, but their death is humane. I see everyday all the animals all over the country...the world even, that are suffering because of us. The human races breeds and exploits innocent creatures that depend on us for everything, then we fail them by surrendering them when they become too much work, or until we've made our money from them through their puppies. I we were to do that to a person we would be punished by the laws that are put in place to protect humans, where is the animals protection? Most people see them as objects, something you own and can discard when you see fit. Have you ever really looked into their eyes? The express emotion the same as you and I. They feel pain, they cry, the grieve. I see posts on Facebook with pictures of dogs and cats in kennels, hoping and pleading for someone to take them home. You can see the hurt in their eyes, you can see the fear, and most likely you are seeing their last photo. So many are put to sleep simply because there are too many. People continue to breed and over breed dogs. I know that it's taking a chance getting an animal with an unknown history, but most times then not, the reward is much greater than the risk. I once rescued a Shepard mix from the pound, she and mange, she was allergic to EVERYTHING, we had to work hard taking care of her, but she was worth it and when she died at the age of 9, part of our family died that can never be replaced. Even if you don't like animals, it doesn't mean you can't be a voice for the voiceless, any decent human being can see the wrong in the world when it comes to animals.
